IBM Data Science Certificate: Twelve Courses, $196

12 courses

The IBM Data Science Professional Certificate is the more technical of the two big Coursera data certificates, and — counterintuitively — the cheaper one, because IBM's stated pace is faster than Google's. Twelve courses at four months and ten hours a week works out at $196 at Coursera's $49 monthly rate.

What it contains

Twelve courses, offered by IBM through Coursera. Its published tool list is the most detailed of the certificates covered on this site: Python, SQL and R as languages; Jupyter and JupyterLab, GitHub, R Studio and Watson Studio as working environments; and pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Folium, ipython-sql, scikit-learn and SciPy as libraries. It also names Plotly, dashboard creation and generative AI.

Spreadsheets are not on that list. If your target work runs through Excel and a BI tool, that absence is the deciding fact, and the Google certificate — which names spreadsheets first — is the better fit. That comparison is made directly on the page pricing both certificates at their own stated pace.

The pace, and why it makes this the cheaper one

Coursera states four months at ten hours a week for these twelve courses, against six months at ten hours a week for the Google certificate's nine. At $49 per month that is $196 against $294 — so the more technical programme, with more courses, carries the lower stated cost.

Treat that as a pace rather than a promise. Twelve courses in four months is a faster rate per course than Google's nine in six, and whether it holds for you depends on how much Python you arrive with. Use the seven-day free trial to measure your own rate before you commit, which is the argument made in how long it really takes to learn SQL.

The credit recommendation, read precisely

The programme's page states an ACE and FIBAA recommendation for up to 12 college credits and 6 ECTS credits. Both halves of that sentence need care.

A credit recommendation from the American Council on Education is a recommendation to institutions that they may award credit for the learning. It is not accreditation of the programme, and it is not an undertaking by any particular institution to accept it. If credit is your reason for enrolling, ask the institution you care about, in advance, in writing. "Up to" is also doing work in that sentence.

Who it fits

Someone with a working spreadsheet background who wants the code layer next, and is prepared to be uncomfortable for the first few courses. It suits people whose goal is modelling rather than reporting, because it reaches scikit-learn rather than stopping at visualisation.

It does not suit a complete beginner who wants a gentle orientation. For that, the Google certificate is broader and slower by design, and worth the extra $98 — the argument is laid out in whether the Google certificate is worth it. And if the modelling is what you are really after, the machine learning course comparison covers the shorter, cheaper route to it.

The shape of twelve courses

Twelve courses sounds like a lot until you look at what they have to cover. A programme that starts from no programming and reaches scikit-learn has to teach a language, a query language, a working environment, a set of libraries, visualisation, and then modelling on top of all of it. Each of those is a course's worth of material at minimum.

The practical consequence is that the early courses move quickly and the middle ones are where people stall. Python and pandas arrive before you have much sense of why you need them, which is the standard difficulty with this ordering and the reason the first month feels harder than the last.

The vendor-tooling question

Two names in the published tool list are IBM's own: Watson Studio as an environment, alongside the neutral ones. That is entirely reasonable for a certificate IBM produces, and it is worth noticing rather than objecting to.

The transferable skills here are the open ones — Python, SQL, R, Jupyter, GitHub, pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, SciPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn — and they dominate the list. A platform you may never use again is a small price for a programme that otherwise teaches standard tools. Just do not mistake fluency in a vendor environment for the skill itself, which is a thing that happens with every vendor-produced course.

Against the Google certificate, directly

The two are usually presented as alternatives at the same level, and they are not at the same level. Google's nine courses are broader and stop before modelling; IBM's twelve are narrower in tooling and go further. Google names spreadsheets; IBM does not. IBM reaches scikit-learn; Google does not.

On price at their own stated paces, IBM is $196 against Google's $294, which inverts the usual assumption that the more advanced thing costs more. If you are genuinely undecided, the deciding question is whether your next job involves a spreadsheet every day. If it does, take the broader one — the reasoning is in whether the Google certificate is worth it.

Before you start the trial

Two things are worth doing in the seven-day trial rather than after it. Work through enough of the first course to find your actual rate, because at four months stated and $49 a month, a rate half what IBM assumes doubles your bill. And look at the fifth or sixth course in the list rather than the first — the early material is gentle everywhere, and the middle is where a programme's real difficulty lives.

If you are also considering buying through Coursera Plus at $239 for the year, check that this specific certificate carries the Coursera Plus badge on the day, because Coursera states that certain Professional Certificate programmes are excluded.

IBM certificate questions

How much does the IBM Data Science certificate cost?
It is sold as a Coursera subscription at $49 per month in the US and Canada, read on 24 September 2026. At Coursera's stated pace of four months at ten hours a week, that is $196. Coursera Plus at $239 for the year is the cheaper route if you will take other courses too, subject to Coursera's published exclusions.
Is the IBM certificate better than the Google one?
It is more technical and cheaper at its stated pace; it is not more suitable for everyone. IBM's twelve courses name Python, SQL, R, pandas, NumPy and scikit-learn and do not name spreadsheets. Google's nine courses name spreadsheets, SQL, Python, Tableau and R, and stop before modelling. Choose by which list matches the work you want.
Does it give college credit?
It carries a recommendation, which is not the same thing. The programme page states an ACE and FIBAA recommendation for up to 12 college credits and 6 ECTS credits — a recommendation that institutions may award credit, not a commitment that any of them will. If credit is the reason you are enrolling, confirm it with your institution before you pay anything.
